Daffodil Project to Distribute Free Flowers in Prospect Park on Oct. 1

Local nonprofit New Yorkers for Parks has announced that its annual flower distribution initiative, the Daffodil Project, will be taking place in Brooklyn next month.

On Oct. 1, from 10:00am-1:00pm, the volunteer program will set up a distribution station at Prospect Park Plaza West to hand out free daffodil bulbs to Brooklynites.

The free flowers are given out to plant them in memory of the countless New Yorkers whose lives were lost due to 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Daffodil Project is an opportunity for New Yorkers to come together and create a beautiful, living memorial for those we’ve lost, sparking healing, togetherness, and joy,” said Adam Ganser, executive director of New Yorkers for Parks.

New Yorkers for Parks, an independent organization that advocates for quality parks and open spaces in New York City, established the Daffodil Project back in 2001.

Since that time, the organization says that over 400,000 volunteers have planted more than nine million daffodil bulbs throughout NYC.

In addition to honoring New Yorkers, New Yorkers for Parks says that the aim of the initiative is to serve as a catalyst for citywide parks stewardship and civic engagement, along with advancing the nonprofit’s call for 1% of the city budget going towards NYC Parks.

“Flowers, parks, and natural spaces have a significant impact on our quality of life, and New York’s city government must follow through on the mayor’s verbal commitment to increase spending for the Parks Department to 1% of NYC’s annual spending,” said Ganser.
