NY4P and Play Fair deliver Council testimony to defend parks

New Yorkers for Parks continues to resist all NYC Parks funding cuts proposed in Mayor Eric Adams’ latest executive budget and push for transformative investment in our parks and open spaces. We call on the Mayor and City Council to allocate 1% of the city budget for NYC Parks and fulfill all our parks funding asks, including the baselining of 1,000 maintenance positions. 

At last week’s City Council hearing, NY4P’s Adam Ganser testified alongside the New York League of Conservation Voters Natural Areas Conservancy, Forest for All, and Sunrise Movement. We also held a day of action in City Hall Park and at the City Council building on 250 Broadway to share our parks funding asks with Council Members on the day of the NYC Parks Executive Budget Hearing.

Advocates convene at parks budget briefing

Vishaan Chakrabarti and Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) hosted NY4P, Council Member Shekar Krishnan, and a diverse array of parks advocates including foundation leaders, non-profit organizations, and neighborhood parks stewards for a deep dive into the proposed FY24 budget for NYC Parks.  

A crucial question served as a jumping off point: Why are we operating from a place of scarcity? Attendees discussed the unequal impact of parks disinvestment in disadvantaged neighborhoods, the need to fund full-time parks worker positions for both career development and improved parks maintenance, and parks as critical infrastructure in the fight against climate change and the movement for safer communities.

Revisit the New-York Historical Society Climate Lab

Following the release of our 1% for Parks Impact report, NY4P policy lead Daniel Abram and Council Member Shekar Krishnan joined historian Russell Shorto at the New-York Historical Society Climate Lab to discuss historic disinvestment in parks and open spaces and the urgent need for a fully resourced parks system.
